Alexandria, the Mediterranean base of Alexander the Great, was one of the major centres of the Graeco-Roman world.
Modern-day Alexandria was laid out in the 19th century by Muhammad Ali who fashioned an alternative capital that attracted Greeks, Jews, Italians and Maltese, as well as Syrians and Circassians.
Many extraordinary public buildings - palaces, banks, churches and an immense synagogue - still survive, reflecting the ambitious and eclectic range of styles adopted in the 19th and early 20th century.
Today Alexandria continues to be a richly atmospheric city, especially after the revival of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
